HIKING, BIRDING Montagu Mountain Nature Reserve extends over 1 200 ha and lies on the northern edge of the Langeberg range. These form part of the Cape Folded Belt, and outstanding geological formations which have resulted from the folding and faulting of the rock can be seen in the reserve. Dry montane fynbos (heath) grows on the mountain's lower slopes, with more moist heathland in the higher regions. Aloes and other succulents predominate on the north-facing cliffs. Leopards still occur in the mountain range, but klipspringer, grey rhebok, rock dassie and baboon are the species more likely to be seen by the visitor. The Keisie River, which flows southwards through the nature reserve to join up with the Breede River, is home to a rare fish species, Burchell's rad-fin minnow. Location: South-east of Worcester. Access: From Worcester take the R60 through Robertson and Ashton, take the R62 on through Cogmanskloof to Montagu. This road runs through the nature reserve. Day hikers pay R1 admission at Old Mill, at the top of Tanner St in Montagu. Accommodation: 2 6-bed cabins with cooking and ablution facilities for hikers only (R20 per person per night); limited camping is allowed. There is a variety of accommodation in and around the town of Montagu. Other facilities: 12- and 15 km hiking trails, shorter walks; public sites with fireplaces nearby at Keurkloof. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 24 hours.
